Before there were a Lady Gaga, Grace Jones graced the scene and made it possible for Gaga to even be Gaga. Grace created the vision of performance artistry within her music, fashion creativity, as well as being a huge fashion icon for the fashion world, a trend-setter, and creating a cultural movement. Many designers then and now still sample from Grace’s iconic and crazy style. In the late 1970’s and throughout the 1980’s, Diva Grace Jones, started out her career as a model, broke into the music industry with wild and exotic outfits, a short retro hair style, crazy shoulder pads, and the infamous hooded scarfs that everyone wears nowadays.
In that time period, there was she was like no other. Everyone was at awe of her outlandish outfits and music that they grew more and more to her. Growing up in a very Christian strict Jamaican household, she rebelled against that and became so of a “FREE BITCH” may have you and became an international icon. Her liberating attitude, free bitch mentality, and crazy style made her pave the way for now, Lady Gaga, who pays much homage to Grace and even said most of her inspiration comes from Grace.
Grace has truly made an impact on our pop culture. She changed the way we saw music, how we saw ourselves, and stepping outside of the box and doing your own thing, why? ‘Cause we were born this way! LOVE YOU GRACE!
