Rap icon Nas has given rare insight into the story of his showdown with Tupac Shakur and Death Row records in New York's Central Park in 1996.
The Queensbridge emcee confronted Tupac after the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards in a meeting set up to clear the air after blistering disses aimed at a range of New York emcees on Shakur's 7 Day Theory album.
Speaking to long-time business associate Steve Stoute at the SXSW Music and Media conference on Friday, Nas revealed he took it upon himself to rep his city in a meeting with Tupac and his Death Row crew.
"There was no-one really around from New York that represented New York physically at that time," explained Nas, adding: "I felt like he was in my city, so I gotta step to this guy."
The 38-year-old revealed Tupac was prepared to cool the beef, saying: "Me and you are brothers. Me and you are never supposed to go at it. But I heard you was dissing me on mixtapes."
Describing the incident as "a very dangerous situation," Nas also revealed the pair were supposed to have another meeting to squash the beef entirely, but it never came to pass.
