SUPERSTORM Sandy smashed into the US last night hurling a devastating 13ft surge of seawater into New York City and leaving at least 16 people dead across the country.
The monstrous wall of water sent cars floating down Wall Street and the lights went out on the Statue of Liberty and in Lower Manhattan.
More than 6.2MILLION people across the US eastern seaboard were left without power because of the cyclone which flooded subways and sparked a string of electrical fires.
Gusts of up to 99mph battered the region as it was engulfed by a tidal surge.
Meanwhile, the lights went out in the southern part of the city.
Eerily, the city WAS lit up as electrical faults ignited fires.
A raging blaze also set around 50 homes on fire in the Queens area of New York.
More than 200 firefighters are battling the inferno. It is not known if anyone has been injured.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: “We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by Hurrican Sandy.
