Interview: Jordan Riber, director of Siri ya Mtungi
After four months of shooting the television series, Siri ya Mtungi, director Jordan Riber fell in love all over again with Tanzania, its humanity and its beauty.
“I love the cast of Siri, and I know that audiences will love them too,” he said in an interview.
The young director found the huge task daunting at first. His first task was to audition 2000 actors, many professional, but many more first-timers, for a colourful and rich drama that digs deep into peoples’ lives.
“There was so much material to work with. But I found the strong mix of drama and comedy in the story very exciting. We deal with serious issues, that deeply affect the lives of people, but we are doing it in a funny way that people can enjoy.”
The beauty of film, Riber explained, is that it allows the audience to get up “close to our characters.”
“We can enter their thoughts and be a part of their inner most feelings. We can be part of what torments them and what makes them love and hate.”
The series was shot about forty per cent in the studio and sixty per cent on location, with three weeks in Bagamoyo, fify kilometres north of Dar es Salaam. Riber says the crew was “very well received by the people and authorities in Bagamoyo, and it was a pleasure to shoot in such a beautiful place.”
This outstanding series is due to be aired weekly at 9:30pm every Sunday on ITV and 9:30pm every Wednesday on EATV!
Mahojiano: Jordan Riber, Mwongozaji wa Siri ya Mtungi
Baada ya miezi minne ya kupiga picha ya tamthilia ya televisheni, Siri ya Mtungi, mwongozaji Jordan Riber amezidi kuipenda Tanzania, kwa ukarimu wake na uzuri wake.
“Nimeupenda uteuzi wa waigizaji wa Siri, na najua watazamaji watawapenda pia,” alisema kwenye mahojiano.
Mwanzoni mwongozaji huyu kijana alitaka kukata tamaa alipoona mzigo huu ni mkubwa. Jukumu lake la kwanza lilikuwa kuchagua waigizaji kati ya wasanii 2000, wengi wazoefu, lakini wengi wengine wapya, kwa ajili ya tamthilia iliyopambwa na visa vikali vinavyogusa ndani kabisa maisha ya watu.
“Kulikuwa na vitu vingi vya kufanyia kazi. Lakini niligundua mchanganyiko madhubuti wa visa na vichekesho ndani ya hadithi uliofurahisha sana. Tunashughulika na masuala mazito, yanayogusa sana maisha ya watu, lakini tunayafanya katika njia ya kuchekesha ambayo watu wataburudika.”
Uzuri wa filamu, anaelezea Riber, ni kwamba inawaruhusu watazamaji kuamka na kuwa “karibu na wahusika wetu”.
“Tunaweza kuingia ndani ya mawazo yao na kuwa sehemu ya hisia zao za ndani. Tunaweza kuwa sehemu ya nini kinachowatesa na yapi yanayowafanya wapende na kuchukia.”
Asilimia 40 ya tamthilia hii ilipigwa studio na asilimia 60 ilipigwa sehemu nyingine, zikichukua wiki tatu Bagamoyo, kilomita hamsini kaskazini mwa Da res Salaam. Riber anasema watendaji walipokewa vyema na watu na viongozi wa Bagamoyo, na kwa kweli ilikuwa ni starehe kupigia picha katika eneo zuri kama lile.”
Tathmilia hii itaonyeshwa saa 3:30 usiku kila Jumapili kwenye ITV, na saa 3:30 usiku kila Jumatano kwenye EATV!
